CLAHE

Contrast Limited Adaptive Histogram Equalization

Definition

CLAHE enhances local contrast in images by dividing the image into tiles and equalizing each one separately. Unlike global contrast adjustment, CLAHE reveals detail in both shadows and highlights simultaneously. It's particularly effective for lunar craters and Jupiter's cloud structure. The "clip limit" parameter prevents over-enhancement.
