Wavelet Sharpening
Multi-scale frequency decomposition that enhances planetary detail at specific size scales without artifacts
How It Works
1
Image decomposed into 6 frequency layers using à trous wavelet transform
2
Layer 1: Single pixels (1px scale) - finest noise and detail
3
Layer 2: 2×2 pixel blocks - fine texture like Jupiter cloud wisps
4
Layer 3: 4×4 pixel blocks - medium detail like Saturn ring gaps
5
Layer 4: 8×8 pixel blocks - larger structures like cloud bands
6
Layer 5-6: 16-32px blocks - broad features like planet limb
7
Each layer enhanced with independent sharpen/denoise sliders
8
Layers recombined additively to create final enhanced image
Pro Tips
- -Start conservative: sharpen 0.08-0.12, denoise 0.03-0.07 per layer
- -Layer 1 mostly noise - use sparingly (sharpen <0.05) or skip entirely
- -Layers 2-3 contain most planetary detail - primary enhancement target
- -Always pair sharpening with denoising to control artifacts
- -Process iteratively: small adjustments, check result, repeat
- -Over-sharpening creates 'ringing' halos around edges - reduce if visible
