Opposition

When a planet is closest to Earth and brightest

Definition

Opposition occurs when a superior planet (Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, etc.) is directly opposite the Sun from Earth's perspective. At opposition, the planet is closest to Earth, appears largest in our sky, and is visible all night. This is the best time for planetary imaging. Jupiter reaches opposition every 13 months, Saturn every 12.5 months, Mars every 26 months.
