Barlow Lens

Optical element that increases telescope magnification

Definition

A Barlow lens is a diverging lens placed before the eyepiece or camera that increases the effective focal length (and thus magnification) of a telescope. Common Barlow multipliers are 2x, 2.5x, 3x, and 5x. For planetary imaging, Barlows are essential to achieve proper sampling - matching the image scale to your camera's pixel size. Quality matters: apochromatic Barlows minimize chromatic aberration.
