Alignment

Registering frames so features overlap precisely

Definition

Before stacking, frames must be aligned so that the same features overlap pixel-perfectly. In planetary imaging, this compensates for tracking errors, atmospheric shifts, and planet rotation. Methods include centroid (center-of-mass) alignment for simple cases, and multipoint alignment for complex objects like Saturn's rings.
