ADC (Atmospheric Dispersion Corrector)

Prism device that corrects rainbow fringing from atmosphere

Definition

Earth's atmosphere acts like a weak prism, spreading starlight into a spectrum. This atmospheric dispersion is worst near the horizon and causes planets to show red/blue fringing. An ADC uses adjustable prisms to counter this effect, restoring sharp color edges. Essential for planetary imaging when objects are below 45° altitude. Quality ADCs like ZWO ADC or Pierro Astro ADC are popular choices.
